Description
You can read about the history and construction and purpose of the Torre de la Vela (part of the Alcazaba in the Alhambra complex in Granada Spain), but you really just want to climb it for the view! The Torre de la Vela is the tower which dominates both Granada and the Alhambra. The tower itself was built in the 13th century during the Nasrid dynasty and its bell has always played an important role in daily Granadinian life. Until recently the bell's tolling was used by farmers to mark the changes in irrigation turns. It is also rung every year on 2nd January in commemoration of the Taking of Granada by the Catholic monarchs. Traditionally, single girls would climb the bell tower and ring the bell and it was said that if they did, then they would be married before the year was out. From the top of the tower, you can imagine why this tower was so important. You can see all around for miles. including a spectacular view of the Sierra Nevada ("Snowy Range") mountains about 20+ km away! The Sierra Nevada mountains are a popular tourist destination with high peaks making skiing possible in such a southerly location. Parts of the range have been included in the Sierra Nevada National Park. The range has also been declared a biosphere reserve.
